Each year, we produce the State of Remote Work report after surveying thousands of workers — across the United States or across the world — to learn more about emerging remote work trends. Our reports cover all things remote work, including comparisons between remote and on-site workers' salary, tenure, departments, and industries, the reasons people choose to work remotely, how remote work impacts employee hiring and retention, and many other topics.

State of Remote Work Statistics & Data

Global Remote Work Statistics

1. 56% of global companies allow remote work.

More than half of companies around the world allow remote work, are “hybrid companies,” or are a fully remote company. In fact, 16% of Global State of Remote Work respondents report working at a fully-remote company.

2. 44% of global companies don't allow remote work.

Conversely, almost half of global companies require employees to work from an office, with no option to work remotely.

3. 52% of employees around the world work remotely at least once per week, and 68% work remotely at least once per month.

4. South American respondents are 67% more likely than average to work remotely.

When compared to other regions around the world (apart from Antarctica, from where we were unable to find any survey respondents), 

5. Men across the globe are 8% more likely to work remotely than women.

National Remote Work Statistics

1. 62% of U.S.-based employees work remotely at any frequency.

Of the people we surveyed, 745 (62%) work remotely at any frequency, and 457 (38%) work on-site.

2. Nearly 50% of U.S. employees work remotely at least once per week.

The 62% of survey respondents who work remotely do so at different frequencies. 54% of respondents work remotely at least once per month, 48% work remotely at least once per week, and 30% work remotely full-time.

3. In the U.S., there are 18% more executives working remotely than there are working on-site.

Additionally, senior executives and above say they work remotely at least once per week 34% more than those in lower positions.

4. Small companies are 2X more likely to hire full-time remote employees.




5. Remote workers say they’re happy in their jobs 29% more than on-site workers.

Why People Work Remotely

1. Global employees' top reasons for working remotely are: Increased productivity/better focus, to avoid a commute, and to achieve better work-life balance.

1. The top industries represented by remote workers in the U.S. are: Healthcare (15%), Technology/Internet (10%), Financial Services (9%), Education (8%), and Manufacturing (7%).

2. The top industries represented by remote workers around the world are: Government/Education, Finance/Insurance, Technology/Marketing, Healthcare/Medical, and Manufacturing/Industrial.

Top Departments for Remote Workers

1. The top departments represented by U.S. remote workers are: Facilities/Operations/IT (18%),  Customer Service/Support/Success (15%), Sales (14%), Administrative (13%), and Executive/Company Leadership (7%).
