The transition from in-office work to working from home happened practically overnight for most people earlier this year, due to COVID-19.
Working from home can be challenging even for folks who have done it for years, and often takes a period of adjustment to establish a productive routine for remote work. Our attention is pulled in different directions throughout the day, and it can be challenging to prioritize our work, health and wellness, family, and personal interests. Very quickly, the line between work and personal life can become blurred.
Unfortunately, this year most people did not have time for an eased transition or to plan a structured home workday, with stress from the pandemic being high and timelines to move remote short. Many parents have had to care for their children or parents during the workday, too, creating situations where people are working two jobs simultaneously. This can lead to extreme burnout for remote workers if you don’t take the time to focus on yourself.
Now more than ever, it’s important to try to take a break and set clear boundaries between work and personal time. If you can take time to breathe and reset, it will undoubtedly help you be more productive during work hours, and lower your risk of burning out.
